What Does ESG Actually Look Like in Indonesia’s Spice Industry?

As one of the world’s leading spice producers, Indonesia’s spice sector is vital to both international trade and local livelihoods. In today’s global market, responsible business practices are increasingly demanded, making the integration of ESG principles not just a necessity but a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to enhance its competitive advantage.

To explore this transition, we had an opportunity to sit down with the Sustainable Spices Initiative Indonesia (SSI Indonesia) through a short sharing session on 22 May 2026. Julia Rahmi, our ESG Expert, emphasised that ESG serves as a vital mechanism to safeguard the continuity, welfare and market access of the spice business. Especially to face extreme weather, which is already causing crop failures and supply chain disruptions.

She also highlighted the current demands from global buyers, including strict traceability, deforestation-free supply chains, responsible farming, and protection against pesticide residues. Meeting these expectations presents a significant opportunity for Indonesian producers to:

🔓 Unlock premium export market access around the world

📈 Build long-term buyer trust

🌏 Strengthen our global competitiveness

The discussion was rich with insights, as participants actively asked questions and shared their experiences in the Indonesian spice industry. We thank the Sustainable Spices Initiative Indonesia (SSI Indonesia) team for facilitating this valuable session and look forward to meaningful collaboration in the future✨
