Supporting Women-owned MSMEs on Their Sustainability Journey

Tri Hita Consulting had the honor of participating in the APEC Workshop on Sustainability Practices and Reporting for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We were invited to contribute by sharing our experience and knowledge on how sustainability practices can enhance the resilience and competitiveness of women-led businesses. Participants in the workshop came from several APEC countries and neighboring countries, such as Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. Indonesian participants represented by Uttari Karang from the Ministry of Women Empowerment and an MSMEs association.

Our  Environmental, Social, and Governance  (ESG) Team, represented by Julia Rahmi and Giovanni Lucky Hartanto, delivered a session on ESG Disclosure and Reporting. We shared practical insights on how MSMEs can integrate ESG principles into their operations.

In Indonesia, MSMEs play a crucial role in the national economy. According to data from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) in 2024, MSMEs contribute over sixty percent to Indonesia’s GDP and are vital for employment and local economic development. However, this level of activity also has environmental consequences. Daily operations, particularly those that depend on fossil fuels in the manufacturing, trade, and services sectors, generate a significant portion of emissions from MSMEs.

These conditions indicate that MSMEs need a clearer and more structured approach to understand and manage their impacts. To transition towards a more sustainable business model, MSMEs require ESG disclosures that assist organizations in identifying areas for improvement, setting priorities, and monitoring their progress over time.

For MSMEs, this process offers additional advantages:

✨ It enhances transparency, which is increasingly valued by customers, business partners, and financial institutions.

✨ It also helps them show alignment with growing sustainability expectations across supply chains.

With these foundations in place, MSMEs can better compete and adapt to new market demands with increased confidence.

As MSMEs face increasing sustainability expectations, we are dedicated to offering the guidance they need to progress with clarity and purpose. If your organization requires support on its ESG journey, we would be happy to assist you.
