Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting our Internal Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Training at The Apurva Kempinski Bali, with Lintang Mazaya as moderator to guide the session. Throughout the day, we explored the climate impact on the hospitality sector, delved into emission calculations, and examined a real-world case study designed to enhance The Apurva Kempinski Bali staff’s understanding of GHG emissions.
Verena Streitferdt, our Climate Change & Carbon Accounting Expert, offered a clear-eyed view of the current climate realities. She illustrated the ways in which human activities increase GHG emissions and drive global warming. For the hotel industry, these changes present significant operational and asset risks, from extreme weather events to flooding that can disrupt both logistics and the guest experience.
Moving forward, our focus turned to the practicalities of emission calculation. Diva Iswarani and Kurniawan from the Carbon Management team highlighted how emissions management can help hotels comply with reputable standards and strengthen their brand reputation. They then guided participants through the emissions calculation process using a methodology aligned with GSTC standards:
💨Total GHG emissions (tCO₂-e): The final measurable carbon footprint that allows hotels to actively track, manage, and reduce their environmental impact.
📋 Activity data: The quantitative consumption for certain activities, covering Scope 1 (direct emissions like fuel consumption and refrigerant recharges) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity use).
📊Emission factors: The specific coefficients that connect everyday activity data to the actual greenhouse gases generated.
