Transitioning to renewable energy is one crucial means of decarbonisation; however, does renewable energy emit zero emissions?
On 2-6 September 2024, Tri Hita Consulting, in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the dedicated experts, successfully conducted a five-day training program in Bogor to understand Carbon Life Cycle Assessment (CLCA), especially on Hydroelectric Power Plants. The training included 33 participants from the Directorate of Various New and Renewable Energy (Aneka EBT), IPP hydropower plants, and PLN.
This training emphasised the importance of counting renewable energy from cradle-to-grave. There are multiple objectives to conducting LCA; one of them is to analyse and compare one activity to another. For instance, co-firing ammonia (replacing some of the coal used in power plants with ammonia). LCA provides a more comprehensive projection from one action towards the environment (such as Global Warming Potential (GWP), human toxicity, ozone depletion, ocean acidification, etc.), whereas GHG emission only focuses on GWP. Thus, this assessment will be invaluable when policymakers want to create a policy. We embed the training through interactive sessions, case studies, software & tools exploration, and open discussions.
There is no mandatory regulation to conduct LCA, but we hope this capacity building will inspire the participating regulators to make LCA mandatory. With that, we can be more accountable for the carbon emissions but also other negative environmental impacts from our activities.
Tri Hita Consulting is honoured to participate in this capacity-building to solidify further the commitment to empowering stakeholders and advancing sustainable energy in Indonesia.
