Holiday Reminder: Carbon Emission During Travel

In December, Tri Hita staff took the experiment to not fly but travel overland to Jakarta to explore whether it would be beneficial for them and the environment. Transportation is responsible for about 20% of global GHG emissions. With the rising concern of climate change and its effects, it is essential to consider ways to reduce carbon footprints while travelling. Low-emission travel is an increasingly popular way for people to explore while minimising their environmental impact.

Air travel is one of the most important contributors to greenhouse gas emissions; about 2,5% of the total CO2 emissions worldwide. In addition it has negative environmental impacts due to the height of where the emission gets emitted where the gases destroy radiatively active substances like ozone, and the emission of substances that trigger the generation of aerosol particles or lead to changes in natural clouds.

Instead of flying, travellers can opt for alternative modes of transport, such as trains, buses, or bicycles. Trains are an excellent option for long-distance travel, as trains emit less CO2 per passenger than planes, from 1.5 to 10+ times less, depending on the source of energy the trains are fuelled. Short-haul flights (less than 1000 km) are particularly emitting, due to the important energy needed to take off and to reach the cruising altitude.

In December 2022, some of our colleagues travelled back to their hometowns from Denpasar to Jakarta on land, starting by bus, ferry, and train. Overall the journey took a good 33 hrs (with transit time, etc.). However, the total cost per person was almost half of the plane costs. Finally the emissions were reduced by around 35%.

Additionally, the train travel allowed the travellers to see the scenery up close, making the journey a part of the adventure. We would travel on land again; however, trying to reduce long-distance or air travel would also be achievable.

So what mode of transportation do you use for this Eid holiday?
