Advancing Indonesia’s Decarbonization Goals through Biomass Co-Firing

On October 11, 2024, Tri Hita Consulting, in collaboration with BioTanah, proudly hosted an insightful workshop for PLN EPI focused on “Co-Firing Biomass Decarbonisation Strategy”.

During the workshop, we shared our recommendations on project-based greenhouse gas emissions calculation methodologies and introduced the BIPOC tool, a comprehensive resource for Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). We also explored innovative biomass co-firing strategies that can play a critical role in helping PLN achieve its decarbonisation targets.

Our discussions were interactive and solution-focused, allowing us to identify essential steps for PLN’s roadmap, set ambitious biomass targets, and define effective strategies for implementation. Two groups engaged in round table discussions for a BIPOC analysis. Group A explored the use of wood chips at PLTU Amurang, while Group B examined rice husk as a biomass source at Angkrek Gorontalo. Both groups learned about the potential for scaling biomass solutions across multiple power plants and identified key considerations for effective integration into PLN’s operations.

One key takeaway highlighted the need for further assistance in refining GHG calculation methodologies and selecting the most appropriate approach. The eNDC for power generation has already been met (source: PLN “Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP)”), but further calculations are needed to determine the effectiveness in decreasing or avoiding emissions. Another area is the financial feasibility of biomass supply and the challenges related to transportation costs.

This collaboration is paving the way for impactful changes within Indonesia’s energy sector, and we are honored to support PLN in its journey towards sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to this impactful workshop! If you’d like to learn more, feel free to contact www.trihita-consulting.com.

Let’s continue working together to create sustainable future options for Indonesia!
