Advancing Clean Energy: OECD’s CEFIM Workshop on Efficiency and Renewables

Manado 8 – 11 October 2024

The third CEFI training program, a collaborative effort by OECD’s CEFIM, MEMR’s HR Development Agency and RE and EE Training Centre, OJK Institute, CASE, and SETI, has concluded successfully from 8 – 11 October 2024. The week-long training located in Manado, North Sulawesi featured two courses: energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) finance and investment. We were honoured to contribute to the EE finance sessions together with renowned experts from various institutions, including International Energy Agency (IEA), Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Indonesia

As part of the program, EE class participants visited the Masarang Palm Sugar Factory, a unique example of geothermal energy powering palm sugar production. The factory’s innovative approach replaces traditional firewood with geothermal energy. This approach significantly reduces processing time and switches from carbon emission-intensive fuel like firwood to low carbon emission sources such as geothermal.

To culminate the workshop, for the last day, representatives from each class of the Energy Efficiency (EE) and Renewable Energy (RE) finance class  presented their project pitches. For the EE class, one project pitch on compressor renewal estimated annual cost savings of 1.376 million IDR and an emission reduction of 458 tons of CO2e. Meanwhile, a case study in the Bandung F&B Industry demonstrated an electrical motors replacement project with estimated annual cost savings of 270 million IDR and an associated reduction of 203 tons of CO2e in annual emissions. These pitches highlighted the cost and operational savings, as well as environmental benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, that can be achieved through EE & RE investments. I
